Void Calendar vs TickTick
Finish one step, then move to the next
TickTick already brings tasks and calendars together. You can capture work and reserve time for it.
Some tasks cannot begin together. A school assignment needs research before an outline, and an outline before the draft. Putting every step on a calendar does not automatically move the work through that sequence.
In short: If you want a mature, cross-platform to-do list and calendar whose free plan covers daily use, especially for quick capture on your phone, TickTick is the safer pick. If you use an Apple silicon Mac, your tasks follow a clear order, and you want task notes, focus records, and your own AI together, try Void Calendar.

Start outlining when the research is ready
You may want to schedule only the research first, then unlock outlining once the sources are ready, rather than filling the calendar with tasks that cannot yet start.
Void Calendar’s task dependency graph makes that path visible:
Research → Outline → Draft → Check citations.
Finishing research unlocks outlining. Dependency illustration.
Completing a prerequisite automatically unlocks the next task. You do not need to return to a long list after every checkbox to work out what comes next. The graph shows where you are and what is still waiting.
Backlinks keep related tasks and notes connected. Research findings, the teacher’s instructions, and earlier writing ideas can stay connected to later tasks. Dependencies establish the order; backlinks help you find the context needed to do the work.
AI can break down the work and arrange the time
You know the assignment is due Friday, but may not know how long each step needs or where it fits between classes.
Void Calendar lets you choose Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Cursor CLI, Gemini CLI, Kimi CLI, WorkBuddy, Qwen Code, or GitHub Copilot. You can also connect a custom API.
Ask it to plan the assignment for completion by Friday, put research before outlining, and avoid late evenings. AI can break the goal into smaller tasks and arrange sessions around existing events, with task relationships and working notes available during execution.
TickTick now also has an AI Assistant. Its documentation describes breaking down goals and scheduling tasks into remaining available time. I care about how the planned work proceeds, what happens when a prerequisite is unfinished, and whether earlier notes help the next session. See TickTick’s AI Assistant guide.
Plugins can hand work to AI
After planning, some of the work itself can be delegated.
Void Calendar’s plugin system brings those capabilities into the workspace. Hand a task to AI to break it down, or delegate parts suitable for AI to complete. It could organize reference material, extract key ideas, and produce an outline. Return to the result, make changes, and continue with the next step.
TickTick also provides MCP, a CLI, and external integrations for operating tasks from other AI tools. Void Calendar’s plugin workflow brings task handoff, execution, and results into the same workspace. See TickTick’s AI and external tools guide and integrations.
Which one fits
Choose TickTick if:
- You want a cross-platform to-do app whose free plan is enough, especially for capture on your phone.
- You like lists, Kanban, and calendar views in a mature, stable tool.
- You already connect TickTick to other AI tools through MCP or integrations.
Choose Void Calendar if:
- You use an Apple silicon Mac and your tasks have a clear order.
- You want a note with every task and focus sessions recorded back on the time box.
- You want your own AI model to arrange your time, with data kept on your Mac.
I want a task to lead into a breakdown, reserved time, and execution. Finish the current step and find the next one ready.
